Tip of the month
This tip is more for stallion owners that do
AI shipping. Believe it or not with amount of mares that we have here for
breeding or our own, there are several times during the spring and summer we
have no mares in heat.
AI shipments are crucial to our customers and
timing is critical. Many stallions need the mare next to the breeding mount or
they will show no interest.
Here is a tip that we
do so we have our stallions working every day.
Earlier in the spring we actually collect a mares
urine from an in heat mare. This takes two people. One to hold the mare and one to
collect. Tease the mare nose to nose with your stallion. Being very careful the
mare does not kick back, using a large foam clean coffee cup to catch
the urine, use a large topped cup or you will be wearing more then
saving.
We keep a spare deep freezer in the barn just for
extra extenders, coolant cans and so on. We have picked up several old used
plastic ice cube trays at garage sales. Yep you guessed it. We pour the fresh
urine into the ice cube trays and freeze them.
You can pop one cube out at a time and thaw it on
the mount up where the stallions head will be, also rub some by the
back of the mount where he mounts. This works so well if there was a way to patent
it we would.
